A study on a solid oxide fuel cell tri-generation system producing electricity, heat and hydrogen using ammonia |

The development of renewable energy to replace fossil fuels and the development of fuel cells to replace internal combustion engines are recognized as core technologies for suppressing the earth's temperature to less than 2°C. Furthermore, tri-generation systems that can produce electricity, heat, and hydrogen are being proposed and developed. The hydrogen produced by the system is to be used to fill the fuel cell vehicle. This study investigated the tri-generation system based on solid oxide fuel cell(SOFC) fueled by ammonia. The system uses SOFC to produce high efficiency electricity and high temperature usable waste heat in addition to hydrogen by internal endothermic ammonia decomposition. Ammonia used as fuel is cheap, has a high hydrogen content(17.6 wt%), and has the advantage of not emitting carbon oxides. In this study, we investigated the SOFC performance using ammonia under tri-generation conditions to design a small-scale fueling station producing hydrogen of 20kg/day capacity. |
