Gelatin/Itaconic acid Nanoparticles Preparation by Nanoprecipitation for Biomedical Applications |

Natural polymer based nanoparticles have been used for various biomedical applications such as drug/gene delivery, tissue engineering, and pharmaceutical formulation due to their excellent biocompatibility and biodegradability. In this study, gelatin/itaconic acid nanoparticles with 80-200 nm were produced by nanoprecipitation technique. Ethylcabodiimide was used as a carboxyl activating agent for the coupling of primary amines to yield amide bonds. We have also done the surface modification with poly-L-lysine for the purpose of surface charge controls on the surface. Physicochemical characterization with FT-IR, SEM, and swelling test demonstrated that the inclusion of itaconic acid in the particles could increase their water content by 2.2-folds and the surface modification with poly-L-lysine change the surface charge from approximately -20 to +10. |
