Various retention models have been developed and adopted to predict the retention behaviors of solutes in RP-HPLC. Even though the retention times were successfully predicted in gradient elution, it had been difficult to predict the parameters of eluttion profile, such as the HETP, resolutions, and asymmetry factors. Until now, Snyder retention model has been widely used to predict retention behavior in both of isocratic and gradient conditions. However, it has critical defect that it cannot closely follow the retention behaviors of solutes when low amount of organic modifier content is used in the mobile phase, because of the nonlinear relationship between logk and modifier content. A new modified retention model is proposed and adopted to predict the retention times in several linear gradient conditions. A new numerical method that transforms any gradient condition into discrete step-gradient conditions is proposed to predict retention times in gradient elution. To estimate elution profiles and some valuable parameters, a new prediction method for the elution bandwidth based on the band broadening rate is also proposed. |
