제목 Luminescence Comparison of Yttrium and Lutetium Aluminum Garnet Phosphors for the LED Application
초록 Cerium-doped lutetium aluminum garnet (Lu3Al5O12:Ce3+, LuAG:Ce) has been considered as a promising green emitting phosphor for the LEDs due to its excellent thermal stability and optical performances. However, there is a cost issue on the LuAG:Ce phosphor that high cost of the raw material, lutetium oxide (Lu2O3), limits its practical use in LEDs. Consequently, it is essential to develop alternative green emitting phosphors with comparable properties to the LuAG:Ce phosphors. Cerium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Y3Al5O12:Ce3+, YAG:Ce) can be an effective candidate to replace LuAG:Ce phosphors based on the similar properties. However, since the YAG:Ce phosphor emits yellow light, the shift of emission peak to shorter wavelength is necessary to apply YAG:Ce as a green-emitting phosphor.
In this study, Ga3+-substituted YAG:Ce phosphors were prepared by a solid-state reaction and their properties were investigated. The Ga3+-substitution on Al3+ sites results in the blue shift of the emission peak due to the distortion of cubic symmetry of the phosphor. As a result, the energy band gap between the lowest 5d and 4f states increases, leading the blue-shift of the emission peak toward green spectral region. The luminescent properties of Ga3+-substituted YAG:Ce phosphors were compared with those of a LuAG:Ce phosphor, and considered as a promising green phosphor applicable to LEDs.
