Organic Heat Transfer Materials Fabricated by Discotic Liquid Crystalline Building Blocks |

To develop a novel polymeric heat transfer material with heat flow anisotropy, triphenylene-based discotic liquid crystal (DLC) monomers were synthesized. Free-standing polymeric films were fabricated via thiol-ene photopolymerization and the DLC films show advanced thermal conducting property than conventional organic materials. Orientational direction of DLC network was successfully controlled using a strong magnetic field and the uniaxially aligned DLC film displays a better heat conduction performance along the in-plane direction of DLC core. Because of the good interfacial affinity between aromatic DLC cores and of carbon-based thermal conducting fillers, DLC thermal conducting networks are expected to use as organic medium in the carbon-based heat transfer composites.
