Bioimaging in the near infrared (NIR) region is of great interest because of minimal auto fluorescence, and reduced light absorption and scattering. We demonstrate the potential of heavy metal free QDs, CuInS2/ZnS (CIS/ZnS), as a NIR optical probe for tissue imaging. We synthesize highly luminescent CIS/ZnS QDs having an emission spectrum ranged from visible light to NIR. In vitro imaging sensitivity test with a tissue-like phantom reveals that the penetration depth of NIR-emitting QDs is much higher compared to visible light-emitting QDs.
