Direct formation and destruction of the helical nanofilaments in the confined geometries |
초록 |
Bent-core LCs (Liquid Crystals) form a very unique superstructure which is called helical nanofilaments (HNFs), that is aroused by the highly restrictive molecular packing from the molecular shape. Under a physical confinement using porous anodic aluminum oxide (AAO), the growing direction and dimension of individual HNFs are precisely controlled in linear nanoscale pores. To reveal the origin of its helix evolution in achiral organic molecules, we made a novel attempt to apply this system to the mixture of two different homologues that are originated from the same backbone structure with different chain length. It gives only a temporal steric hindrance on molecular packing process, which causes a time delay over the whole formation process maintaining its own developing history. This work gives the important clues for a fundamental understanding of HNF formation that is to enable the non-destructive observation on the whole process in every single steps in real time scale. |
