Catechol conjugated chitosan (CCs) matrices were fabricated via chemical or enzymatic conjugation in this work. The adhesive and cohesive forces were optimized by controlling the degree of cross-linking affected by oxidation degree of the catechol. Meanwhile, the physico-chemical characteristics, the mechanical properties, cytotoxicity, and hemostatic ability of CCs derivatives were investigated to evaluate the performances of catechol-conjugated chitosan matrices. The results show that both degree of catechol substitution and pH could affect the mechanical properties of CCs derivatives. Additionally, cytotoxicity was investigated to evaluate the biocompatibility of CCs derivatives. The results show that both CCs derivatives have good cell viability and hemolytic properties. The hemostatic evaluation also indicated that matrix based CCs derivatives had a good hemostatic efficacy. |
