For the fabrication of remote-controllable actuators, azobenzene-based polynorborne (AZPN) was newly designed and successfully synthesized by ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) to prepare high molecular weight and narrow poly-dispersity index (PDI). The thermal phase transitions of AZPN were investigated by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), polarized optical microscopy (POM) resulted in hierarchical structures. The detailed structures were confirmed through small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD). To demonstrate photodynamic reversible behavior, UV and visible light were irradiated to the AZPN film resulted in trans-to-cis isomerization. The photo-responsive AZPN actuators will be practical device in remote-controllable switches.
