Our research team successfully synthesized liquid crystal physical gels by making a hierarchical superstructure of a macrogelator in a host nematic liquid crystal medium. Due to the anisotropic properties of liquid crystal gels, light scattering was appeared when voltage is not applied. But under the electric field, the liquid crystal gel can show transmittance state. A transmittance state was reversibly switched by applying 22 V. This threshold voltage is five times lower than conventional polymer-dispersed liquid crystal system. According to azobenzene moiety, the transmittance state was appeared under the UV light. Because of the dendritic azobenzene groups, the stability and compatibility between B3AZs and NLCs were improved, but the orientation of B3AZ liquid crystal physical gel was not affected by the alignment layers in the LC test cell.
