The well-defined hierarchical supramolecules constructed by the self-assembly can be organized for the fabrication of remote-controllable actuation and rewritable films. We newly designed and synthesized a benezene-1,3,5-tricarboxamide (BTA) derivative (B9AZ) containing the photo-responsive azobenezene (AZ) mesogens. It was realized that the programmed B9AZ formed the low-ordered hexagonal columnar liquid crystal (LC) phase, the highly ordered lamello-columnar LC phase, and the lamello-columnar crystal phase. Because the shape and color of the robust hierarchical B9AZ films were remote-controlled by the conformational changes of azobenezene moiety in the B9AZ, we successfully demonstrated the remote-controllable 3D actuation and rewritable films by tuning the wavelength of light.
