Oxidation and coating kinetics of Al pack cementation-coated 4130 steel |

Aluminum was deposited on the surface of the 4130 steel by pack cementation process to improve its hot-corrosion and high-temperature oxidation resistance. The coating layer was examined by carrying out scanning electron microscopy (SEM)/energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and x-ray diffraction (XRD). The XRD investigation of the coatings showed that the aluminized coating consisted of Fe2Al5 phase. The coated specimens were oxidized at 500, 600 and 700 °C in static air. Fe2Al5 layer underwent the oxidation to form the FeAlO3 scale in the oxidation stage. The oxidation kinetics followed a parabolic rate law at all temperatures. Flame test was also conducted for the uncoated, coated and oxidized specimens at high temperature at 14650 C. The oxidized 4130-steel specimen with stand for high temperature, the thermal stability of the coating layer over the temperature range up to 7000C was discussed. |
