Fabrication and NH3 gas sensing performance of ZnO hollow urchin-like structure based sensor |

ZnO hollow urchin-like structure gas sensor was synthesized by combining of two steps. The first step was to prepare ZnO hollow half-sphere arrays on SiO2 substrate by sputtering. In this method, polystyrene (PS) spheres were used as templates and the next step was to grow ZnO nanorods on the ZnO hollow half-spheres substrate by the hydrothermal synthesis method using aqueous solution of mixture of zinc nitrate [Zn(NO3)2.6H2O] and hexamethylenetetramine (C6H12N4) at a low temperature of 90℃. The morphology and structural properties of the ZnO hollow urchin-like structure deposited with solution concentration of (0.04M) were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The XRD patterns show the Wurtzite structure of ZnO. The NH3 gas sensing performance of this structure also was studies. It shows that the maximum response to 60ppm NH3 gas in dry air of 4.2 at an operating temperature of 200℃. This sensor also shows the good selectivity to NH3 gas comparing with H2 and CO gases. The sensing mechanism for high sensitivity of urchin like ZnO structure was discussed. |
