Synthesis of biodegradable coating material with improved flexibility and oxygen/moisture barrier properties for paper-based product |
초록 |
Simple everyday material such as paper has the potential to substitute non-degradable applications and elevate plastic pollution. It is naturally robust and biodegradable but almost mandatory to apply non-degradable coatings to prevent it from wetting. In this study, novel biodegradable poly[(butylene succinate)-co-(butylene adipate)](PBSA) was synthesized to substitute existing coating material to function as an oxygen/vapor barrier. Interaction between paper and PBSA was enabled via mercerization of paper with NaOH solution where abundant OH groups substituted with sodium cation act as a focal point of crosslinking. The hot pressing method was used as a coating process ensuring PBSA permeated within the paper matrix. This allows the final product to have flexibility as well as low oxygen/moisture permeability. Finally, enzymatic degradation and composting analysis were conducted to show the high degradability and inert nature of the fabricated product. |
