Biodiesel has been considered as one of the most promising sustainable and renewable energy. Among various biomasses, microalgae have attracted considerable interest because of their nontoxicity, rapid growth and high oil content. In this study, a new process of biodiesel production that utilizes biodiesel as an extractant for lipid extraction from wet microalgae was developed. Biodiesel displayed successful penetration through the cell membrane of wet microalgae and biodiesel-based extraction showed high lipid extraction efficiency from wet microalgae. Altogether, our results suggest that biodiesel-based extraction is an energy efficient technique for the downstream process of microalgal lipid production. |
