Nanoporous materials with high specific surface areas and porosity have been regarded as the most promising candidate to meet the technical targets of US DOE for hydrogen storage systems (5.5 wt.%, by 2025). In this work, we used humic acid (HA) as a precursor for porous carbons by KOH activation. HA is known to have abundant oxygen-functional groups, compared to other carbon precursors. Activated carbons derived from humic acids (ACs) were successfully synthesized, showing large specific surface areas and high microporosity. It was found that the textural properties of ACs strongly have influenced by their activation parameters. In addition, we found that high oxygen levels in the ACs play an important role in improving the acid-base interaction between oxygen functional groups and hydrogen molecules. |
