Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) were blended with polyimides to develop various properties of polyimide by utilizing CNCs. However, the use of CNCs did not show a significant increase of properties due to the phase separation in between polyimide and the CNCs. In this work, we attempted to prepare polyimide/cellulose nanocrystal hybrid nanocomposites having relatively good phase mixing behavior by utilizing polyimide synthesized from a water-soluble poly(amic acid) salt which lead to prevention of phase separation between polyimide and CNCs. For this work, Nano-sized cellulose crystals were fabricated from microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) using sulfuric acid hydrolysis technique. Pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA) - 4,4-oxydianiline (ODA) polyimide was prepared from poly(amic acid) salt (PAAS), which had been obtained by incorporating trimethylamine (TEA) into PMDA-ODA poly(amic acid) in N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc) followed by thermal curing (imidization). |
