Zeolite-based adsorption and catalysis for the removal of hydrocarbons emitted from gasoline powered vehicles during the so-called cold start period will be mainly discussed in this presentation. As our approach toward the use of zeolites for adsorption and catalysis originated from the adsorption and diffusion in structured zeolite films, in the beginning, we will address the molecular transport through zeolite films. In addition, the zeolite itself is not able to remove the cold start hydrocarbons, additional functionality was added by introducing transition-metal-derived chemical species. Both adsorption and catalysis abilities were considered by using a simplified cold start test. Finally, as the hydrocarbon removal is designed for long term uses in gasoline powered vehicles, we will consider the effect of hydrothermal stabilities on the zeolite-based adsorption and catalysis abilities. |
