Tri-cationic room temperature ionic liquid (RTILs) were synthesized using 4 methyl thiazole and glycerol-tri-mesylate. The prepared RTILs were characterized using FT-IR, 1H and 13C NMR, and their physicochemical properties such as thermal stability were studied using TGA and DSC analysis. Prepared RTILs were used as a catalyst for the conversion of fructose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), which is a versatile biomass-based top C5/C6-platform molecule, as it has been used as an initial building block for the production more than 80 chemicals. The different reaction parameters like solvent, temperature, catalyst loading effect have been investigated. Among the different reaction parameters, the HMF yield of 91% was obtained from fructose in with [GLY (mthiaz)3][OMs]3 (IL) at 100 oC within 2 h. The present catalytic system is eco-friendly and low cost, so it can be useful for large-scale industrial production of HMF |
