Polymer science in Korea has come a long way since my first introduction to the subject in 1953 as junior in college. Having lived and studied in America since 1955, it is possible that I may be able to render an objective judgment, however cautiously, for the state of polymer science in Korea today. This is to present my personal view of how it is today after having paid a close attention for over one-half century. The central point is how it stacks up against the polymer research in different subfields in the US. After a series of binary comparisons, an overall evaluation will be made, with a notable caveat that I alone am responsible for its veracity. I will conclude with a set of recommendations toward the goal of becoming globally competitive scientific enterprise, given its well-trained human resources and well-equipped research facilities. |
