Zirconia toughened alumina (ZTA) ceramics has been widely used in various engineering parts due to its relatively high hardness, strength, chemical stability and excellent wear resistance compared with monolithic Al2O3 ceramics. Although the sintered Al2O3-ZrO2 ceramics are useful as insulators, refractories, cutting tools, etc., the significant thermal gradients still exist, resulting in potentially damaging thermoelastic stress distributions and being susceptible to catastrophic failure due to their inherent brittleness. In this research, additives (h-BN, TiO2) are added for improving thermal shock resistance. After making sintered body by hot pressing, the specimens were heated up to a specified temperature and held the temperature for 30min in order to assure temperature uniformity before quenching. Then the specimens were rapidly immersed into a 20℃ water bath. The temperature used were 400~800℃. The results were compared with Al2O3-15wt.%ZrO2 ceramics. |
