CO2-based chemical complex: Synthesis of optimal CO2 conversion configurations with CO2 reduction concern |

CO2 conversion intends to convert CO2 to valuable products via chemical reactions. Economic benefits may be obtained by selling the products. As a large number of CO2 conversion technologies are being considered for potential commercial use, it is very important to have a methodology and tools to identify the promising technical combinations. In this study, an optimization framework is suggested to synthesize optimal CO2 conversion configurations that maximize either operating profit or CO2 reduction. The optimization problem contains models for quantifying CO2 reduction and economic benefits. Target production rates of the candidate technologies are set by solving an LP problem. In the case study, several CO2 conversion technologies are evaluated such as CO2-based methanol, DME, and formic acid production. It is found that optimal CO2 conversion technologies change with assumed scenarios regarding the national market situation and existence of conventional processes to replace. |
