Selective Electrochemical CO2 Reduction: Role of Oxygen |

Recently, research on the carbon dioxide utilization has attracted much attention due to increasing demands to mitigate environmental issues caused by its high concentration in the atmosphere. In particular, electrochemical carbon dioxide conversion is promising as future clean CO2 utilization technology because it can be easily combined with renewable energy resources and then produce valuable chemicals to add economic feasibility. However, efficient catalysts are highly required to be developed because of large overpotential requirements, poor product selectivity and durability. Developing electrocatalsyts with high selectivity of the desired compounds is important because there are various electrochemical CO2 conversion reactions to produce different chemicals, and they seriously competes with hydrogen evolution reaction from water reduction. Recent studies on copper electrodes have reported that oxygen remaining on the surface or subsurface oxygen play important roles to stabilize the intermediate states supported by theoretical calculation and in-situ spectroscopy studies. We also propose that oxygen affects selectivity and stability on Ag, and Zn based electrocatalysts for selective CO production. |
