The various designs of desalination reverse osmosis (RO) membrane have been developed to improve the desalination performance of pressure-driven membranes using organic materials. However, the most RO membranes still suffer from lower mechanical strength and permeate fluxes of the membranes. In this study, we designed the multilayered layer-by-layer (LbL) membranes with inorganic nanosheet of Na+-montmorillonite(Na+-MTM), which has been well known for higher hardness and also effective diffusion barriers. Moreover, given that exfoliated Na+-MTM has a cationic exchange capacity, we anticipate that highly-charged groups on Na+-MTM layers can lead to an increase in the ion rejection of the membrane. Herein, we designed the hybrid nanocomposite RO membranes consisting of Na+-MTM and other polyelectrolytes, such as poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH), poly(acrylic acid) (PAA). Among these components, exfoliated Na+-MTM can enhance both permeate fluxes and ion rejection of RO membranes. |
