Although most of cataract surgery is performed by removal of natural lens, followed by implantation of foldable IOL, there is still a demand for injectable IOL that can be placed through an even smaller incision and preserves accommodation. Silicone compounds are appropriate material as an injectable IOL in terms of refractive index, elasticity, non-toxicity, transparency, and biocompatibility. In this study, silicone prepolymers containing Si-H or vinyl group were cured via hydrosilylation reaction catalyzed by Karstedt’s catalyst. The concentration of Si-H or vinyl groups in the silicone prepolymer was confirmed by 1H-NMR. Swelling of silicone polymers in toluene decreased with an increase of Si-H to vinyl groups of silicone prepolymers. The mechanical properties of the silicone polymers and the kinetics of the gelation were studied by oscillatory rheology experiments at 37 ℃. Silicone polymers had a Young’s modulus comparable to a 20-year-old human lens. |
