Preparation and application of bipolar membranes with durable bipolar junction and high water-splitting capability |

Bipolar membrane (BPM) is an ion-exchange membrane in which a cation-exchange layer and an anion-exchange layer are combined. At the bipolar interface where the two ion-exchange layers are bonded, water molecules are easily dissociated into protons and hydroxide ions by the strong electric field generated when a potential is applied with a reverse bias. The BPMs should have the excellent water-splitting capability and at the same time high binding stability at the bipolar interface. In this study, the interlayer bonding strength of the BPM was improved by introducing a physical interlocking structure along with a chemically adhesive interlayer. It was confirmed that the prepared BPMs exhibit both excellent water-splitting properties and durability. Moreover, the prepared BPMs were applied to various electro-membrane processes such as water-splitting electrodialysis and acid-base flow battery to confirm the performance.
