Ion-Complexed Antibiotic for the Treatment of Osteomyelitis |

Osteomyelitis is a bone infection by bacteria or fungus that causes severe bone damage. In recent years, antibiotic-loaded polymer matrix system has been frequently utilized to treat the osteomyelitis as a local delivery system. However, the insufficient release of antibiotics from the polymer matrix and secondary surgery to remove the polymer matrix still remained as critical limitations in clinical field. In this study, we developed ion-complexed antibiotic which can allow the sustained release of water-soluble antibiotic for sufficient period without any additional polymeric matrix, and thus can be an ideal system for the treatment of osteomyelitis. The drug release behavior, cytotoxicity, and anti-bacterial effect of the ion-complexed antibiotic were investigated. From the effective antibacterial effect caused by the continuously releasing doxycline, we can suggest that the ion-complexed doxycycline may be a promising therapeutic for the effective treatment of osteomyelitis. |
