Ionic Polymer-Metal Composites (IPMCs), as an electroactive polymer (EAP), consist of ion exchange membrane coated with metal electrodes on both sides. It is widely used for industrial and medical applications due to its good electromechanical properties. It has great advantages such as large deformation, lightness, flexibility and low driving voltage. For these reasons, IPMC can be applied to the artificial muscles, soft robotic actuators and dynamics sensors. When electric field is applied on IPMC, polymer membrane is bent toward one side of the surface of membrane. On the contrary, when mechanical deformation is applied on IPMC, it makes output voltages induced by its own bending motion. So IPMCs are not only used as actuator but also as bending motion sensor with its particular properties. In this research, we performed IPMC sensor tests with various methods. Also we verified what is the main factor of sensor voltage and how to determine sensitivity and resolution of IPMC sensors. |
