Human stem cells and low-level light therapy by organic light emitting diode: Against ischemic disease |

Stem cell therapy has been reported as a potential means to treat ischemic diseases. However, previous therapy has shown limitations by its low efficacy. To this end, we introduce a novel method to enhance angiogenic factor secretion ability of human adipose-derived stem cells (hADSCs) by directly irradiate red organic light emitting diode (OLED) light to hADSCs. In this study, OLED treated hADSCs enhanced therapeutic angiogenesis in ischemic tissue by improving cellular functions. We showed that OLED treatment hADSCs induced increment of angiogenic factor gene expressions with enhancement of cell adhesion and migration ability compared to normal hADSCs. Tissue regeneration was also promoted when red OLED light irradiated hADSCs were transplanted to the hindlimb ischemia mouse model. These new findings will stimulate the technologies that directly irradiate light to stem cell to enhance its therapeutic effect. |
