Extraction of Lithium from Water Solution by Reusable Magnetic Adsorbent Incorporating Selective Lithium-Binding Peptide |

We have reported the magnetic beads incorporated with the lithium-binding peptide as a distinctive approach for the adsorption-based lithium-ion extraction. Three different lithium-binding peptides (GPGNP, GPGAP and GPGDP) were analyzed and compared to find out the maximum lithium adsorption system. The 5 amino acid sequence peptides were covalently bonded onto the surface of magnetic beads via the carbodiimide-mediated amide bond formation process. GPGDP exhibit maximum adsorption for lithium ions compared to other peptides in monomeric form. Compared to the adsorption capacity of a bare magnetic bead (8.0 mg lithium /g bead), a peptide-bonded bead exhibited a capacity more than five times higher than that of a bare bead (36.4). The high-affinity peptide (GPGDP) was then tested in trimeric peptide form for the lithium extraction. The selective removal of lithium in the presence of other interfering metal ions was also demonstrated metals ions namely Pb (II), Ni (II), Co (II) and Cu (II). The adsorption Isotherm followed the Langmuir model successfully. The maximum adsorption loading (qmax) of 102 mg lithium/ g bead was achieved via the trimeric form of (GPGDP) bead system. |
