Coaxial electrospinning is a convenient and flexible method for producing responsive and functional polymer composite fibers. By inserting one or several capillaries inside the main spinneret we can introduce core fluids inside the polymer sheath that need not be polymeric in themselves, for instance liquid crystals or liquid metals. Such liquids give new functionality to the polymer fiber by virtue of their unique properties, strong response function in the former case, high electrical and thermal conductivity in the latter. Our aim in this work is to combine multiple functionalities in a single fiber by employing electrospinning with more than two nested capillaries, introducing different liquid crystalline and other functional materials next to each other in separate core channels. |
