Soft nanophotonics with coaxially electrospun polymer fibers functionalized by cholesteric liquid crystals |

Soft self-assembling photonic materials like cholesteric liquid crystals (LCs) are attractive due to their multiple unique and useful properties, in particular an optical bandgap that can be continuously and dynamically tuned in response to weak external influences, easy device integration, compatibility with flexible architectures and, as shown here, potential for nano-optic applications. We study coaxially electrospun polymer fibers with a core-sheath geometry in which the core is a short-pitch cholesteric LC. The fibers display highly interesting optical response, distinctly different from that of the bulk LC, as a result of the LC confinement within a cavity with lateral extension in the range of few hundred nanometers. By visualizing the internal structure of the core-sheath fibers using Focused Ion Beam (FIB) milling, we can associate the optical texture with the shape and size of the cavity hosting the LC. Our results prove a new behaviour of cholesterics at small scale and open an attractive route to polymer fiber-based nano-optic applications. |
