Synthesis of Pyrene-Containing Sulfur Copolymers as Cathode Materials for Lithium-Sulfur Batteries |

Development of well-defined and stable cathode materials for lithium-sulfur (Li/S) batteries remains a challenge. Most of the recent reports on novel cathode materials for the Li/S batteries involve sulfur/carbon nanocomposites in which sulfur or its direct derivatives are incorporated into porous carbon matrices. These methods, however, have several limitations including the difficulty in verification of exact physicochemical structure of the composites. Furthermore, the weight ratio of active sulfur fillers over carbon matrices is relatively low. In order to address these drawbacks, we report herein the synthesis of pyrene-containing sulfur copolymers with high sulfur content via “inverse vulcanization”. It is anticipated that the incorporation of pyrene group would allow for the homogeneous dispersion of carbon additives into the sulfur copolymer matrices, resulting in the enhancement of electrical and, subsequently, the materials’ performance at the cathode of Li/S batteries. |
