In this work, we used Ketjenblack (KB) as carbon materials for the production of porous carbon by chemical activation with KOH. Activated Ketjenblack (AKB) materials have high specific surface areas (up to 1891 m2 g-1) and various pore sizes (0.46–0.66 nm) in the ultramicropore range. The textural properties of these materials depend strongly on their activation parameters, particularly the KOH/carbon mass ratio. These AKBs achieved hydrogen storage capacities of up to 2.1 wt.% at 1 bar and 77 K, and large heat of adsorption values of up to 8.7 kJ mol-1. The interaction between hydrogen and the carbon surface was more closely related to the porosity than to the surface oxygen content. Among the textural properties of the samples, the pore size and volume were found to be the key factors affecting hydrogen adsorption. |
