Although polylactide (PLA) is considered as an environmentally friendly and renewable fiber or film material, the weakness in thermal resistance, toughness and dimensional stability limit its long-term applications. To overcome these limitations of PLA homopolymer, in this study, we synthesized PLA/POSS hybrids with various POSS contents by ring-opening polymerization of L-lactide monomer with aminopropylphenyl-POSS initiator in the presence of stannous octoate catalyst. The molecular weight and chemical structures of PLA/POSS hybrids synthesized were confirmed by solution viscometry and 1H NMR spectroscopy. Morphology, optical clarity, thermal property, thermal resistance, and mechanical properties of PLA/POSS hybrids were also investigated by using FE-SEM, optical microscopy, DSC, TGA, and UTM, respectively, in a systematic way. |
