제목 Synthesis and Characterization of TiO2 Nanowires on Flexible Substrates for Solar Cell Application
초록 Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) have been extensively studied over the past decade because of their low cost production and fairly good efficiency exceeding 10%. Most DSSCs have been based on sintered TiO2 nanoparticle electrode, where electrons percolate through the TiO2 nanoparticles. Recently, much attention has been focused on nanowire-based electrodes in order to overcome the extremely slow percolative movement of the electron. The nanowires can yield considerably higher electron mobility (a few cm2•V-1•s-1). Even though many methods have been successfully developed for the synthesis of TiO2 nanowires, most of them were limited to solution-based and template-assisted approaches. It can be greatly useful to synthesize highly-quality TiO2 nanowires directly on large-area substrates via vapor-solid method for practical DSSC applications.
In this study, we demonstrate the direct synthesis of TiO2 nanowires on flexible large-area substrates and investigate their characteristics for solar cell applications. The TiO2 nanowires were synthesized via simple thermal treatment of pre-sputtered Ti thin film under methanol, ethanol, or acetone vapor. The 0.7 um-thick Ti film was deposited onto flexible stainless steel (SUS) substrate by dc magnetron sputtering. The Ti film/SUS was subsequently loaded into a quartz-tube furnace. Then, the nanowires were grown with supplying methanol, ethanol, or acetone vapor at a desired temperature (550-800 oC). The furnace pressure was varied between the ranges of 4 and 100 Torr. The morphology and size of the nanowires were characterized by using field-emission scanning electron microscopy and the crystal structure of the TiO2 nanowires was analyzed by using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). It was clearly seen that the TiO2 nanowires were formed at a high density. The nanowires appeared to be grown homogeneously with a length of ~5-6 um and ~50-60 nm of diameter. The XRD and TEM studies confirmed that the nanowires were single-crystalline rutile and the growth direction was the rutile [110]. We will further discuss the characteristics and performance of the TiO2 nanowires as a solar cell electrode.
