Synthesis of epoxidized sunflower seed oil and its application in epoxy blends |

In this study, epoxidized sunflower seed oil (ESSO) was prepared by the reaction of sunflower seed oil with glacial acetic acid and hydrogen peroxide using Amberite IR-120 as a catalyst. Optimal reaction conditions were determined through investigating the effects of catalyst content, reaction temperature and time, and oxidant on yield of ESSO. The yield was higher than 90% under the optimal reaction conditions. Epoxy resin/ESSO composites were prepared by melt blending of epoxy resins and ESSO using N-benzylpyrazinium hexafluoroantimonate as a cationic latent catalyst. Effect of ESSO content on the impact strength of the blends was studied. The impact strength of the blend with 30 wt% ESSO was 60% higher than the neat epoxy resin. |
