Fabrication of layer-by-layer assembled charge mosaic membrane |

Charge mosaic membranes (CCM) can be employed in an energy-efficient process for desalination via salt enrichment. Herein, a CCM was fabricated through layer-by-layer alternate assembly of negative/positive domains bonded by poly(sodium styrene sulfonate) in poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA-PSS) in butyl acrylate. PVA-PSS also served as the negative domain while poly(diallyldimethyl ammonium) chloride blended in poly(vinyl alcohol) was prepared as the positive domain. Results reveal that surface charge density balance between two domains is critical for the CCM to achieve high salt enrichment and mechanical stability.
