Carbon thin films, a kind of coatings which consist predominantly of the carbon element, have attracted great attention due to their wide applications such as electrodes, nanoelectronics, sensors, electric heating elements, etc. Since aromatic polyazomethines as liquid crystalline polymers with carbon-nitrogen double bonds possess excellent thermal stability and mechanical property as well as high carbon yield, they can be adopted as precursors for carbon thin films. In this study, we have fabricated polyazomethine-based carbon thin films via spin-coating and following carbonization at 1000 °C. For the purpose, an aromatic polyazomethine is synthesized by using isophthalaldehyde and 2-cyano-1,4-phenylenediamine. The thickness of the spin-coated and carbonized thin films is controlled by the precursor concentration in NMP solvent. The structural features, optical and electrical properties of the carbon thin films are characterized by considering the film thickness and microstructure. |
