Photo-responsive Behaviors of Azobenzene Functionalized Liquid Crystalline Polymers (azo-LCNs) and Polyimides (azo-PIs) |

Photomechanical effects in materials, composites, or systems are a promising way to transduce input light energy into useful work. This talk will summarize our activities on the stimulus response of azobenzene functionalized liquid crystalline polymer networks (azo-LCNs) and polyimides (azo-PIs). Exposing the azo-LCN cantilevers with various liquid crystal orientations to 445nm blue light as an actinic stimulus generates several photomechanical responses (bidirectional bending, high frequency oscillation, and three-dimensional bending/twisting responses). These photo-responses are explained by the trans-cis-trans reorientation mechanism. Photo-induced bending responses of azo-PIs are studied by azobenzene concentration, crystallinity, free volume, pre-stretching and backbone rigidity and are explained by the rotational freedom of the polyimide chains (segmental mobility) and fractional free volume. |
