Two-dimensional muscovite nanosheets produced by liquid exfoliation |

Two-dimensional nanosheets with atomic or molecular thickness have being generated considerable research effort because of their exotic electronic and mechanical properties and high specific surface area. However, the development of these layered materials has been hampered by the lack of simple process to exfoliate them with strong interlayer forces. Natural muscovite is a layered silicate with extremely strong interlayer forces. We reported exfoliation of bulk muscovite in common solvents to give mono- and few- layer nanosheets using the intercalation of organic species such as trimethyloctadecylammoniumchloride, polyvinylpyrrolidone and 3-(aminopropyl) trimethoxysilane. This work attempted to open and to pillar the interlayer and then to increase the basal spacing of muscovite through thermal, ion exchange treatments and intercalation of organic species with a solution process. The mechanism of the exfoliated muscovite nanosheets in solution has been investigated and discussed. |
