Room temperature ionic liquids consisting entirely of low molecular weight cations and anions have been attracted significant research interest as candidate electrolyte materials for a variety of electrochemical applications including energy harvesting/storing devices, electrochromic/electrochemiluminescent cells, sensors, and flexible electronics due to their outstanding chemical/electrochemical/thermal stabilities, negligible vapor pressure, good mobility, and high capacitance. To obtain such excellent properties mentioned above in solid films, structuring polymers that form 3D networks in ionic liquids are blended with the ionic liquids of interest. The resulting solid polymer electrolytes, also known as ion gels, exhibit both outstanding electrolytic and mechanical properties of the ionic liquids and network polymers, respectively. These ion gels were successfully applied in electrochemical devices such as thin-film transistors, light emitting devices, and supercapacitors. |
