We describe a synthetic approach for fabricating uniform silica/zwitterionic polymer hybrid nanoparticles, in which the living radical polymerization was employed. Our approach is based on the graft polymerization of zwitterionic polymers onto silica nanoparticles. For this, we introduce trichloroacetyl groups onto silica surface as initiation sites and polymerization was carried out using Mo(CO)6. The particle size of resulting hybrid nanoparticles was changed from 20nm to 500nm. The surface wettability was regulated by changing the copolymerization rate of the zwitterionic monomer to the hydrophobic monomer. Finally, by fabricating Pickering emulsions and liquid marbles, we demonstrate the effective assembly of the hybrid nanoparticles at the liquid-liquid interface and the liquid-air interface, respectively |
