Radical addition and fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) process is one of the controlled radical polymerization techniques that prepare polymers with controlled architecture. However, since it generally uses conventional thermal initiators, such as AIBN or BPO, as a radical source, natural broadening of molecular weight distribution of the prepared polymers is unavoidable. In this work, we used photochemical process to generate radicals in RAFT process. Commercial photoinitiators were used in the polymerization of vinyl acetate using xanthates as RAFT agents. The polymerizations were well controlled to give polymers with low PDI values. We also studied roles of the photoinitiator and the RAFT agents in the process to achieve better control of the polymerization process. |
