Colorimetric sensor is a convenient, cost effective, and non-power-operated green material for hazardous gas detection. In this study, we investigated the effect of dye contents of a sheath/core (S/C) structured nylon6/PP fiber on the colorimetric sensing property in melt-spinning process. Colorimetric fibers were prepared by various rhodamine concentrations and draw ratios. Morphological, thermal, mechanical properties of the sensor were carried out by field-emission scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and universal testing machine. The response of the S/C structured nylon6-rhodamine/PP colorimetric fiber to various exposure levels (1, 10, 100 ppm) of HCl gas was characterized by a homemade computer color matching machine connected with a gas flow device. From the results, we confirmed that this colorimetric fiber sensor could detect acid gas in the concentration of 1-100 ppm with sensing response time of 10 s at room temperature. After washing with a laundry detergent for 30 min, the colorimetric sensors still exhibited sensing property. |
