Operating the proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC), the relative humidity of fuel and air is very important to provide both sufficient proton conductivity and mass transport. In general, current density at 20% humidification was one fifth of current density at 100% humidification. However, tangled Nafion polymer between the agglomerated Pt/C particles on gas diffusion layer (GDL) coated by electrostatic spray deposition (ESD) method held the water, so it obtained 0.88 times current density at 20% humidification compared to 100% humidification. Hence at low relative humidity condition, membrane-electrode assemblies (MEA) obtained a good performance. In this paper, electrodes for PEMFC with Pt loading 0.12 mg/cm2 were prepared by ESD method on microporous layer (MPL). As a result, the good performance (1.25 A/cm2 at 0.5 V, 70℃, using Nafion®212 membrane and 100% humidification) was achieved by using this electrode. At 20% humidification, MEA obtained a lower current density (1.1 A/cm2). |
