Wringing gels (denoted as AZPD3BP) comprised of photo-responsive azobenzene (AZ) and three biphenyl derivatives (3BP) tethered to a 1,4-phenylenediformamide (PD) core were newly synthesized to understand a relationship between superstructures and properties. Based on the structure analysis, it was found that layered superstructure of AZPD3BP was formed in bulk state mainly driven by the intermolecular hydrogen bonds and spacing-filling while it exhibited a three-dimensional (3D) network organogel in solution. Upon UV irradiation onto the 3D networked organogel, the solvent of organogel was compressed due to photoisomerizable AZs, resulted in phase transformation. This light-induced wringing gels can be contributed to remote-control molecular electronics and delivery system.
