Noble metal nanoparticles (NPs) display unique localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) when excited by light, which is crucial for variety of applications. Moreover, the interaction between proximal NPs can generate extremely strong electromagnetic fields called “hot spots”. Hence, we synthesized core-satellite superstructures consisting of two distinct NPs, i.e. Au and Ag NPs, in polystyrene-block-poly(acrylic acid) micelles. Firstly, the Au NPs were modified with Raman active ligand and encapsulated inside PS core using the method reported previously. Subsequently, Ag NPs were synthesized in PAA corona by the addition of AgNO3 and hydroquinone. Here, the core-satellite superstructure shows the inhibition of plasmonic coupling between Au core and Ag satellites inside PS-PAA micelles. However, we discovered that the final assemblies could provide multiple scattering which leads to amplification of SERS activity by orders of magnitude. |
