Characterization of melt intercalated PETG-Organoclay nanocomposites |

Glycol Modified Polyethylene Terephthalate (PETG) and organophilic montmorillonite (OMMT) were intercalated by a melt intercalation method using a twin extruder to produce nanocomposite. The d-spacings of intercalated caly were investigated via a X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), and the intercalation spacings were calculated. The microstructures of PETG/OMMT were examined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). A thermogravimetric anaysis (TGA) showed that thermal stability and regiduals changed with the clay content. Morphology of PETG/OMMT was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Rheological properties of the PETG/OMMT were also investigated using a rotational rheometer with a parallel-plate geometry in a steady shear mode. They exhibited shear thinning and increased storage and loss modulus with the clay content. |
