Pressure Retarded Osmosis (PRO) is one of membrane processes for harvesting cleaning energy. However, as other membrane processes, pressure retarded osmosis process have inevitable membrane fouling problem, the accumulation of various organic, inorganic, and biological foulants on membrane surface. This membrane fouling issue can be solved by performing appropriate membrane cleaning process; however, membrane cleaning study in PRO process has rarely studied. In this study, physical and chemical cleaning methods were applied in PRO membrane fouling and their cleaning efficiencies were compared. Before performing each cleaning method, membrane fouling occurred by sodium alginate for 24 h. As physical methods, applying high shear stress and backwash methods were applied; as chemical methods, two different chemical cleaning agents were used. |
